Attractions
- Basilica of Superga. Lovely monument that stands on the Superga hill north-east of Turin. To reach it, we recommend the Sassi-Superga dented tramway climb. The single full ticket costs € 4 (€ 6 for return) on weekdays, and € 6 (€ 9 for return) on Saturdays and public holidays.
- Walk in the Parco del Valentino, a large public park in Turin on the banks of the Po. On particularly hot days, it is very nice to spend a few hours in the shade of the plants, possibly eating a quick picnic-style lunch on the benches or in the grass.
Getting around Tourin
- We advise to use public transport, as they allow you to easily reach all areas of the city by bus, tram or metro. The day ticket, which can be purchased in tobacconists, underground stations or thanks to the TO Move app, costs only €3,70 per day (the single ticket costs €1.90 so it is cheaper to opt for the day ticket). There are also tickets valid for several days, which can always be purchased in tobacconists or subway stations at vending machines.
- There is the possibility to rent scooters and car-sharing cars. While the first option might be useful, the second proves a bit inconvenient due to the traffic in the city.
Shopping
- The main shopping streets are Via Roma, Via Lagrange and Via Garibaldi.
- Balon: antiques market every Saturday in Borgo Dora, Cottolengo, Lanino, Mameli, Cortile del Maglio streets.
- Gran Balon: over 300 stalls, 50 shops, bars and historic restaurants every second Sunday of the month bring life to the Gran Balon, an antiques and vintage market in the City of Turin for 30 years. It expands between streets Lanino, Mameli, Canale Carpanini, Cortile del maglio, Borgo Dora: antique dealers, second-hand dealers, collectors and artisans carefully display their wares, furniture, ceramics, books, clothing, vintage, handicrafts.
Supermarkets close to Ma.Ma Suites
- In Porta Nuova train station you can find Esselunga, a high quality supermarket open everyday.
- In Piazza Carlo Felice 18, under the arcades, there is the Carrefour Express. Here you will find more variety of products than in the previous supermarket. It is also a recently opened supermarket, so it is very clean, tidy and fairly well stocked. From the apartment, this shop is an 8-minute walk away.
- Another possibility is given by the LIDL in Via Carlo Alberto 22, an 11-minute walk from the apartment. In this case, it is a rather large supermarket with a good variety of items at very affordable prices.
Discovering San Salvario
San Salvario is a historic district of Turin, located south-east of the historic center, between the Porta Nuova station and the Valentino Park.
San Salvario changes completely according to the passing of the day and, above all, of the night. Yes, because we are facing an area of Turin that, while it is quiet and silent during the day, becomes incredibly alive at night and is populated with people of all ages.
We are also in a deeply multi-ethnic neighborhood, and the reasons are to be considered historical. In fact, in this area, at the end of the nineteenth century, the first Fiat factory was founded, therefore, also thanks to the EXPO that was held in 1884 at the Parco del Valentino, the district became an important area for trade and therefore began to coexist with different ethnic groups. Even today, the neighborhood is an example of multi-ethnic coexistence, and within a few streets, four religions are practiced: Catholic, Waldensian, Jewish and Muslim.
